You don't have to be German - or even work at Deutsche - to appreciate Oktoberfest. But don't worry if you can't get to Munich. London provides it all.
First, the facts.

Oktoberfest takes place in Munich from the 22nd of September to the 7th of October.

And why does it start in September if it's called Oktoberfest?

Weather, natch.

The original Oktoberfest (1810) took place between the 12th-17th of October, and as the festival gained in popularity, it was lengthened and brought forward so the evenings would be warmer. Keeping one foot in tradition, the last weekend of Oktoberfest is in fact in October.

Our London hosts play with the dates a bit, but all that means is more Oktoberfest here...

Fulham's Oktoberfest Pub celebrates all year, but they have special Beer Fest parties on 15th of September and 27th of October. They're supported by Paulaner, and import everything, from the pork knuckles to the frauleins in dirndls. For a little something extra, they also offer Jelly Wrestling on the first Sunday of the month (this isn't so German). Entry is free for the parties, but you must reserve.

Also on the westside is Steins, the Bavarian Beergarden on the Richmond Riverfront (a classier option). They serve serious sausage and sauerkraut, and several varieties of Erdinger Wheat Beer. Last year they organised an Oktoberfest river boat cruise, which sounded like a pretty great time.

Shoreditch's Bavarian Beerhouse will be hosting parties every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 20th September until 27th October. They'll be transforming the bar for the month, and serving Warsteiner and Paulaner, with 10p from every stein sold to benefit the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. Tickets are £12.50, and include one stein (which is two pints of beer), pretzels and live entertainment.

Of course, you can also create your own Oktoberfest at the German Deli Stall at Borough Market, or the German Deli Shop near Clerkenwell.

We recommend the Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut und einer Extraportion Senf.
