A currency trading friend of mine is 20 weeks pregnant. We met for dinner a few months ago, and she said gleefully, "I'm allowed to have 1-2 drinks a week!" My God, I thought. How do I get that doctor?
And now it's my turn, and last week I had my first 'real' appointment.
As the midwife went through the list of preliminary questions, she asked, "Do you drink?"
"Not anymore," I replied.
"Well, just so you know, as of today the official word is that you can have 1.5 units of alcohol a day. It was 1-2 per week before, but studies have shown that one small glass of wine a day is fine. Needless to say, this whole ward is going crazy over the news."
"Are you kidding me? That seems crazy!"
"I know," she said. "Do with it what you will - but only after the first trimester."
So there it is. Women are now being advised that it's OK to drink 1.5 units of alcohol a day.
Shall we crack open a bottle to celebrate?
Or is that just stupid?
