You may well have crossed paths with HITCitizen Mr King-Edwards in one of the City's best drinking spots. In this instalment, he visits the newest branch of Rocket (and likes it). And next week, he goes to the opening of The Abbey Bar. Of course he does.
Well hidden in a quaint little square (Adams Court) that nestles between a gym and a Starbucks on Old Broad Street lies Rocket, which is firstly notable for its outside drinking area. In these inclement months, let's face it, no one could care less, but as the summer approaches, there's nothing that puts a smile on the face more than a cold glass of wine or beer in the sun.
Whilst Late Night London continue to take over the City with their identikit knocking shops (take a bow Mr. Agenda, Ms. Abacus and Cousin Apt), it's always refreshing to see a different, and more discerning tavern in which to while away the hours.
A caveat for the gents perhaps - there are no televisions on which to watch the sport. This may account for its popularity with the ladies, well-dressed groups of which you will see quaffing wine on any given day. In addition, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the punchy wine list, the impressive selection of whiskies and the nice selection of bar snacks.
Those who prefer to drink inside will be gently entertained by a selection of the latest pop hits of the day, mixed with some old classics, but there's no dance floor, and in no way is it a place generally known for the ability to make any Thursday night 'acquaintances'.
Size is a factor here though, and it can get crowded if the weather is cutting up rough. Rocket is also perhaps a little sedate for the younger professional, and lack of draught lager may keep away some of the more 'rustic' clientele. Plus it's pretty much dead after 11pm.
This having been said, Rocket is a small but very charming affair with helpful bar staff to assist your whims, and is a more-than-adequate spot for a few after work drinks or a convivial, more protracted session.
