S&M With Gravy
A fool's mind is in the gutter. We're talking sausage and mash here.
There is a time and place for everything. Some people believe this time is college, but in our case, it was a night out with a friend that took us from the City to Spitalfields Market in search of something to eat.
While the options at the recently overhauled market are plentiful, we decided to stay slightly off-market and visit the S&M cafe. Not only had I not been there for a number of years, but they also tempted us with an offer that you could treat a friend to a 1p dinner. In tough times, this is something to be cherished.
The prospect of a 1p dinner gives room to many jokes, in particular after a few drinks. Comparisons to RyanAir (dinner is 1p, but you get charged £5 for the cutlery and another £3 for paying your bill) came to mind, and there was endless bickering about which of the two dinners would be the 1p meal, and that whoever got it shouldn't be so stupid as to just split the bill equally.
I ordered the The Islington, whilst my dinner companion went for fish and chips. The sausages arrived soaked in gravy which probably no doctor would recommend, and were delicious. The fish and chips went down equally well, and the food was perfect for slightly boozy alfresco dining in the shadow of the Square Mile.
When the bill arrived, both dinners were shown at full price, which was rectified quickly after we pointed out that we were indeed friends and should be covered by the special offer.
Needless to say, next time I am at Spitalfields I will probably be with the toddler and therefore end up in Giraffe again. But if S&M were offering balloons for minors with a suitable label, I might not have to wait that long to go back.
