Ms Robinson does not understand the theory and purpose of corn chips. The idea of actually paying for a dish of corn carbs glued together with bright yellow cheese, and then eating it, is truly bizarre. Like wearing Crocs really.

Sadly this type of thing is what has passed for Mexican food in London, until recently (though in many minds in still does.) Fortunately HITC Life’s editor is an American (Ever think you’d see 'fortunately' and 'American' in the same sentence?) and knows her burritos.

"Meztizo," she said. "You won't look back."

“We’re going Mexican,” I told the Hedgie, who immediately ran to his dress up box and produced a sombrero. “Do I look nice?”

It took us a while to get to Mestizo because Hedgie insisted on hiding behind walls and only coming out when I said the coast was clear.

“I think I’d ditch the toy gun if I were you."

"Only when we’re safely over the border,” he replied. “I have to protect you from bandits.”

Mestizo is an oasis in every way. Cool and uncluttered with a design and comfort level way beyond it’s pricing, the welcome is made sweeter by the Mexican staff. We were among people who knew their chillies, and the presence of numerous well-heeled Americans in the restaurant was a good sign. So was the list announcing no less than 125 varieties of Tequila. The beautiful Adriana pointed to the top shelf of the bar, indicating a number of bottles that could not be opened as they were ultra rare and could only be sourced in Mexico.

“I’ll go with you and protect you Adriana,” blurted out Hedgie, clearly smitten.

She smiled and brought us the most delicious starter of spiced fish in a crispy fried corn wrapper. The menu here features snack type food, such as burritos and tacos, as well as more formal style dishes. And Mexican salads. Have you ever seen Mexican salads before? Thought not. We had Molcajete Mestizo, where chicken, beef, pork or vegetables are served in a smoking hot stone bowl with cheese, chorizo, spring onions and avocado. We also had chicken with huasteco sauce. With 32 ingredients including chocolate it was rather good. Even the tacos and burritos here are special: served with a large tray of 30 or so different additions, each one in a gorgeous silver pot.

We drank Margaritas and Mexican lager. Afterwards we were treated to a Tequila tasting. Go. Do it. Now. The aged Tequila is guaranteed to put a lazy smile on your face. They like to party, these Mexicans, and downstairs is a bar where, each Thursday, they serve Tacos from only £1.00 and Corona Extra at only £2.50. Of course the big attraction of these nights is that lots of warm Latin bodies turn up to shake their thing and rub against other warm bodies.

“Can we go, please, please?” said Hedgie

“Another night. It’s a big day for you tomorrow. You have sums to do.”

Downstairs at Mestizo can be hired for parties and with Tacos, Tequila and sizzling Mexican guitar all you have to bring is a wild spirit. Fees are reasonable and can be found on the website. From 8th September through 13th, the restaurant is having its Dia de la Independencia & Semana Gastronomica which all culminates in a Mexican Independence Day party on September 15th. I’m reliably told this will book up very fast.

This restaurant is seductive. It looks stylish, the food is great, there is lots of good stuff to drink and the vibe is well, upbeat. This is a place to relax and have proper grown up fun, bring friends, share food, enjoy Tequila and leave with a big smile on your face knowing you will come back.

Here Is The Writer : Ms Robinson

Ms Robinson Ms Robinson was once a copywriter who wrote award winning ads and had eight hour lunches. Weary of the sex, glamour and lavish parties, she switched to corporate communications where she held the hands of executives and banned them from writing this execrable sentence: "In this ever changing world, the only constant is change itself." These days she writes for an increasing variety of people and has ghostwritten several books but if she told you who for, she'd have to kill you. Click here to read her blog, Woman of Experience.
