Tucked away like a local's secret off of Chiswick High Road, Sam's occupies the interior of a reclaimed paper factory, a bright, modernist space containing both a bar and a brasserie with discrete tables for two as well as larger tables for bigger groups.
The ethos behind Sam's is to use ingredients which are both fresh and seasonal. The menu emphasizes hearty, flavour-packed interpretations of regional and modern British food with more than a nod towards co-owner Rick Stein's seafood restaurant in Padstow, where co-owner Sam Harrison was General Manager.

My starter of buffalo mozzarella with broad beans and pea shoots (£6.50) was a great example of how freshness of ingredients is important, but its how they are put together that counts. The dressing of mint and lemon complemented the dish perfectly, and I would have been happy to have had it again as my main. My partner was equally impressed with his smoked chicken and avocado salad with mustard dressing (£6.50).

For mains, my partner chose an incredibly 'more-ish' sea bass served with a fennel, dill and lemon risotto (£15.25), whilst I enjoyed a very simple but tasty fine herb and Gruyère omelete (£10.50). We complemented this with a fruity, first class bottle of Rick Stein's 2007 Australian Sémillon (£15).

Having left just enough room for sticky toffee pudding (£6) and a lemon sorbet (£5.50) we rounded off this very enjoyable meal with a LBV port (£5.50).

Sam's is certainly to be recommended, and with its additional brunch, lunch and bar menus, is perfect for the lightest of appetites to the most substantial at any time of day.

Rick Stein and Sam Harrison also own Harrison's in Balham, and if Sam's is anything to go on, we're guessing that Balham residents are pretty happy too.

Here Is The Writer : Martin Gallagher

Martin Gallagher Martin Gallagher has never played for West Ham or England, nor had a number one hit single, but he has worked in the City for many years (for what that's worth). A life-long Londoner, he made the migration from east to west a few years back and is still trying to get used to the absence of fried chicken takeaways and the over abdundance of coffee shops. Martin is married, has two daughters, and is also interested in travelling, football and writing. He hopes to publish his first novel 'sometime in the future'.
