Mala in St. Katherine Docks offers amazing value for money. It should be packed all the time, especially at lunch.
I live not far from St. Katherine Docks, and the only reason I go is to visit Bob at Lagoon Dry Cleaners. He does excellent work (and works fast). And every time I walk there, I see Mala Indian Restaurant, and wonder how on earth they can stay in business. It's so often empty!
So this past Monday - on a whim - I decided to go with a friend. It was delicious, and the best value for money I've found in a while.
Their £12.95 three-course lunch menu offers a few choices, all classic choices. For starters (and after Pappadums) we had a Vegetable Samosa and Onion Bhaji (large and tasty, although the Bahji was a bit greasy), for mains we had Chicken Tikka Masala (boring, I know, but so good), and as sides we chose Bombay Aloo (good) and Karahi Chani (transcending). And with the set meal came Naan, Pilau Rice, Dahl and Raita. And mango or pistacio ice cream! There was so much food we took leftovers home (it's an American thing).
The restaurant is huge and although the decor is a bit dated, sitting in the marble-floored room by the windows is lovely. The ladies room was clean, but a bit old. But as good as the food was the service - I actually felt like the guys working there really liked their jobs. Service with a smile and then some.
So those of you at Soc Gen, BGI and DnB, you're too close to pass up this great lunch deal!
