Not far from London Bridge is one of the greatest local g-pubs, which admittedly is so restaurant-like you'd be lucky if you could go just for a drink. But the food is consistent, the shabby-chic interior is welcoming, and the service is not bad at all.
The Garrison Public House on Bermondsey Street is the kind of place you wish you had around the corner.
I wish it, anyway.
Last weekend we went for Sunday lunch with an American friend who'd never had a Sunday Roast, and five others who were well-versed in such matters. It was our third visit, and our most successful yet.
We all ordered the beef except one, who got the duck. Two would have opted for a roast chicken, had it been on the menu. (Is chicken too mundane these days? We surmised so, but were sorry, since a good roast chicken is the best comfort food.)
One of our group was a chap from Yorkshire who asked for a replacement Yorkshire pudding, since his was looking a little tired. The accommodating staff brought a better one, but still, they were a bit on the small side (although very tasty).
Everyone agreed that the meat was top-notch, and the vegetables were perfectly crisp. We ordered a side of green beans, and they too were spot on.
The service was good, although drinks throughout the meal took a bit longer than seemed necessary. But the place was packed.
Our only real complaint is that space is tight, and our poor pal (who'd already been injured by the Yorkshire pudding) got bumped regularly. But I suppose the real complaint was toward that woman with the flowers who glared at him as if it was his fault...
Be warned, though: they will give your table away if you're more than 15 minutes late. And trust me on this: there will always be a true local waiting for that to happen.
