Despite its location close to Hays Galleria and the London Dungeon in the heart of the City, Georgetown is often overlooked by tourists. This is fine for City workers but a missed opportunity for everyone else.
Add to that the fact that Georgetown is remarkable value for money and it's not hard to understand why this gem is a secret Londoner's want to keep to themselves.

Named after the East India Company's port in Malaysia, the decor at Georgetown is best described as London's answer to Raffles in Singapore - all wicker seating, colonial artifacts and potted plants - so not to order a Singapore Sling to kick off the evening (absolutely sensational) would be a dire mistake.

The eclectic menu features authentic recipes from Malaysia, as well as Chinese Malaysian and Indian Malaysian dishes, all of which tantalize the palate and satisfy the soul. For those who like to experiment there's the opportunity of choosing different dishes from different regions although unless you are an expert it's best to get some advice from your waiter. These guys don't just take your order, they positively revel in explaining every dish and describing every taste.

Firm favorites are Udang Bakar Kerring (pan fried spicy jumbo prawns with roasted parotta) or Mysore Aadu (slow cooked lamb with roti chania and Malaysian coleslaw) for starters followed by Hainanese Nasi Ayam (roast chicken with fragrant rice with a sauce of blended chilies, soya, ginger, garlic and lime juice). For desert try something really different; Ais Kacang, - shaved ice piled onto a mixture of red beans, crushed nuts, agar jellies, sweetcorn, black jelly, vanilla ice cream and rose syrup - absolutely divine!

Fish lovers and vegetarians have an equally impressive menu to choose from. If you fancy fish go for Ikan Kurau, a fish steak found only in Southeast Asian waters, beautifully marinated and then fried and served with mangetout, or go for my favorite, Thair Satham; cool yoghurt rice served with okra, aubergines, red onions and tamarind accompanied by acar (a mouth watering cucumber and carrot pickle).

For lunch or dinner with a different twist you really should try Georgetown. It's a sophisticated restaurant without being at all stuffy and is suitable for food enthusiasts and those with more traditional tastes, but perhaps best of all it's excellent value for money. Most starters are around £6 or so with main courses coming in between £12 to £14.

One thing's for sure: there's no other restaurant like it in London.
