Taman Gang may no longer be in its hey-day, but the food, ambiance and service are all still there. And with a location 10 feet from Exit 2 at the Marble Arch tube station, what's not to like?
I've now been to Taman Gang four times in the past two years, in four stereotypical settings. Date with boyfriend, double date with another couple, date with best friend, and drinks with a gaggle of girls.
Date with boyfriend
Went after a couple's Cleopatra Mud Bath at The Edwardian May Fair Spa (tell me one couple that goes and doesn't do it - seriously!). Restaurant was totally empty, but then it was 6 p.m. on a Sunday. Food was delicious and the quality and quantity of food left us feeling refreshed and happy.
Double date
This time, a Friday night. Place was still pretty empty, but did fill up a bit as the evening wore on. Might have seen a mouse run through darkened section, but we're in the big city. Not bothered. Loved the chili chicken and soft shell crab maki rolls, and of course the black cod.
Date with best friend
Decided Taman gang serves the best black cod with miso outside of Nobu. E&O's family of restaurants all serve a good one, but not quite this good. Also decided the chicken satay wasn't necessary, but the prawn dumplings absolutely were. And the chocolate valrhona cake with green tea ice cream.
Drinks with a gaggle of girls
Showed up at 11 p.m. and took over the elegant lounge, filled with candles and orchids. Everyone got their fix (champange, wine, fruity cocktails) and we still made the last tube home.
Apparently a new restaurant website is on its way. Does that mean things are looking up again?
They should be.
