Haz (E1 7DJ)
Haz haz become my regular Liverpool Street Station lunch date spot. In & out in an hour for £15, with reliable Turkish fare that's perfect right about right mid-day.
OK, so it lacks atmosphere, the tables are super close together, and if you don't ask for a jug of water, you'll never get your glass of tap refilled. And the food sometimes comes almost too quickly, but beyond that, it's perfect for an easy in, easy out.
The first time I ate at Haz I meant to have dinner at Kenza, where more commitment is required on all fronts (and where I still haven't been).
But I happened upon a parking space on Cutler Street - right in front of Haz - and as my friend and I had hummus on the brain, we were happily to trade the unknown restaurant 50m away for the one right in front of our bumper. And dinner turned out to be great - although we were seated in the last row of tables, right in front of the kitchen, and left smelling like a kebab smokehouse.
Soon after, I returned for lunch, and have been back for three lunches since.
Each time, we've been unable to crack £20, ordering from the set menu (£6.45 each for six small plates) and supplementing them with a few small requirements - primarily Hellim cheese and vegetarian Dolma. At my most recent visit, we ordered six dishes from the hot and cold Meze menu, and found we had more than enough. Our bill? £16 each.
To be fair (and to give an indication of how I like to eat), I've never had a main course at Haz, (although the smells wafting outside of the restaurant are heavenly).
But when one of the options is so many small things, who wants to settle for something big?
