While nothing beats a super fabulous hotel with its blackout blinds (except for one with electronic blackout blinds), sometimes you gotta shake it up.
Next time you're in New York, take a side-trip to Litchfield Hills, Connecticut. Winvian is a resort with nineteen totally unique and luxurious cottages (along with the requisite spa and really good food). You can sleep in a log cabin, treehouse, "cave" or an old (plush) helicopter, stay in an artist's cabin and paint (for real), pretend to camp, or stay in a cottage inspired by the Mark Twain's Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court or the Skull & Bones Society (Yale University's famous secret society). It's elegant, and humorous and more than a little comfortable.

On the other coast we have the famous Madonna Inn, located in San Luis Obispo, California. It's seriously camp, with 109 differently themed rooms, all straight out of a 60s TV show. A few of our favourites are Bridal Falls (which includes a waterfall shower), the hot pint and red Sugar Spice (next door to Everything Nice) and Caveman Room (done in rock and animal prints). A one-night visit would be perfect, especially if it included a slab of USDA beef in the Gold Rush Steak House.

If these locales are too far away, there's always the Hotel Pelirocco in Brighton, which has the benefit of being sponsored by Absolut, PlayStation 2 and Durex (in that order). All rooms are inspired by pop-subculture icons, so don't expect an easy-listening experience. We know someone who rented the Durex Playroom and almost never came back...
