The city that is the setting for Romeo and Juliet is unabashedly romantic. It also has historic sites, stylish shopping and some of the best food in Italy. What more do you need?
This makes it a great place to visit anytime, but especially during the Opera Season. And aside from our star-crossed lovers, Verona is probably most famous for the spectacular Roman Arena - a Roman amphitheater - the stage for the annual festival.
The 2007 Opera Festival of Verona is in its 85th year, and runs until September 1st. Tickets are still available for some performances, which include such mainstays as Pucinni's La Boheme, Rossini's The Barber of Seville and Verdi's Aida and La Traviata.
If you decide to go, the Byblos Art Hotel Villa is the perfect place to stay (and they'll even offer complementary transfer to the centre of the city). The hotel is a classical Venetian style villa which brilliantly blends tradition with modern art and design (and we do mean hip and modern).
The hotel is surrounded by beautiful gardens which provide the setting for a swimming pool and spa. Housed in an internal courtyard, one of the restaurants provides the perfect venue for summer dining.
And should you decide to stay in one day, you can get a Chenot Method treatment at the spa, then go wine tasting in their extensive cellar.
If you can't fit it in this year, the 2008 season begins on 20th June and ends on 31st August, so mark your calendar now.
