- The Real Greek (Six Locations) (10/02/2008)
Greece has something for everyone. We explore four places where your perfect Greece will make all the sense in the world.
Crete - for citrus and olive groves
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands. Mountains, sparkling seas and ancient history combine with the Cretans' relaxed nature to make the island an idyllic holiday destination.
Perched on a hillside overlooking the sea on Crete's northern coast is the Elounda Gulf Villas & Suite, a family-run boutique hotel with simple, chicly adorned villas, each with a private terrace and pool. The hotel restaurant and bar overlook the main pool, and the Elixir Spa Gallery, with gym, saunas, steam bath, massage room and outdoor heated Jacuzzi, is available to all guests.
If you want venture out, the north coast bustles with thriving resorts as well as historic towns such as Rethymno and Chania.
Santorini - for stylish Greece
Santorini features traditional white houses balance on the sides of volcanic cliffs overlooking dark blue waters, interesting inland villages, and excellent beaches with black sand.
One of the island's gems is the Hotel Katikes, a romantic spot hanging from a cliff over the picturesque village of Oia, where Aegean architecture blends past with present in a free form fantasy of stairs, bridges, cubist cottages and infinity pools. Interiors are minimalist, and all rooms have balconies and dramatic views.
Candlelit dinners are served in the open-air restaurant, and there are secluded terraces for privacy and relaxation.
Oia is famous for its spectacular sunsets and according to legend, the atmospheric town is haunted and home to vampires.
Zakynthos - for turtles
Turtles have been migrating to Zakynthos for thousands of years and visitors to the island can take glass-bottomed boat trip to view them.
One of the most private and luxurious holiday destinations in Europe is the Porto Zante De Luxe Villas - three villas set in acres of gardens with exclusive beach access, 24 hour room service and a boat for island hopping. The villas are beautifully designed and furnished with stone, wood and marble that blend harmoniously with the environment, but lack nothing on the technology front.
From the villas you can walk into the nearby busy resort of Tsilivi or travel along the coast to Alykes for excellent windsurfing.
Kefalonia - for Captain Corelli's Mandolin
Set in the Ionian Sea, Kefalonia offers inviting beaches, rugged scenery, high peaks, historical ruins and famous Greek hospitality.
Perfectly positioned on the shores of a bay, the Emelisse Art Hotel provides effortless luxury, tranquility and modern conveniences. The hotel has a choice of three restaurants and a wide range of facilities, including tennis courts, gym, complimentary cycles, diving courses, excursions and boating, along with swimming pools and a spa. At night the hotel is lit by soft lamps and candles the perfect setting to relax on one of the numerous expansive terraces and star gaze.
It is worth hiring a car to explore the island, starting with the nearby village of Fiskardo. Its pastel-painted 18th century Venetian houses cluster by the harbour, which is a popular berth for yachts, and despite the summer crowds, Fiskardo retains its charm.
