HITC has two friends who had to cancel trips because of the sub-prime mess. Our advice to them? Book replacement trips that are bigger, better, faster, more. We've got two South African suggestions.
A Race 'n Roar Safari
For the hardcore only, this trip is four days long.
The first two days are spent learning how to drive on the Formula 1 track at Kyalami in Johannesburg. You'll be wearing a race suit in a Reynard 98, and eventually race against your friends. And yes, of course there will be a prize ceremony at the end.
You'll stay at the super stylish Melrose Arch Hotel before taking a short flight to the Madikwe Game Reserve.
The second two days are spent at the super luxurious Tuningi Safari Lodge, where you'll stay in a bungalow with outdoor shower. By day you'll head out to see the Big Five (in this case: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino).

Ticket to Ride is offering month-long surfing trips to South Africa and Mozambique. The trips combine surfing instruction and community service, which means that by our accounts, you can in one month:
African Road Trip 1: 9th Nov 2007 to 8th Dec 2008
Mozambique Surfari: 6th April to 28th April 2008 *
African Road Trip 2: 13th July to 11th Aug 2008
