The days of decadent travel are done. For now, anyway. (And we'll be sure to let you know when they're back.) In the meantime, show some responsibility - to yourself or to someone else - while still getting your adventure on.
You could even call it 'luxury shame'. You've still got a job and your bonus last year wasn't horrendous. But are you really going to tell your colleagues that you're going to a private island in the Maldives? We didn't think so. (Besides, what if you can't say the same thing about your employment status next year?) Instead, try this six-person safari in Uganda, which runs all year:

Comfort Class Safari - 8-day Pearl Of Africa
  • Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary - meet its rescued chimp population
  • Lake Mburo National Park - nature walks, game drives, boat cruises to spot animals and birdlife, including zebra, buffalo, leopard, crested crane, kingfisher
  • Buhoma, beside Bwindi Impenetrable National Park - guided gorilla trekking, spend an hour with a family of endangered mountain gorillas, nature walks
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park – see its tree climbing lions
  • Kazinga Channel – boat cruise to see birdlife and hippo
  • Accommodation: comfortable hotels, tented camps and lodges with ensuite facilities
  • Cost: Entebbe to Entebbe: £2,330 per person + gorilla permit from £331 per person

Maybe your bonus wasn't so great - or you're living off a package - but still need to get away. Madagascar has only recently been put back on the map by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and is a very reasonable place to visit (just go with a recommended tour operator). This tour takes 10, is available all year round, and will even have you fishing for your own supper.

Adventure tour - 8-day Madagascar Dhow Sailing
  • Hellville Port on the Island of Nosy Be – explore this charming town and colourful markets
  • Six days of sailing around the Nosy Be archipelago - swimming, snorkeling, fishing, befriending Lemurs, kayaking around mangroves, walking through forests and camping on secluded beaches
  • Accommodation: guest house (one night), camping in two-person dome tents (six nights)
  • Cost: Hellville to Hellville: £650 per person

Or maybe you just realise how lucky you are (sitting in your home or office, well fed, well clothed and well sheltered), and want to give something back. This eight-person tour will work building a local school in Zambia, and is available from March to October.

Voluntour - 6-day Community School Building
  • Help construct a school which will help give the local children a much-needed education and stay on the Zambezi River
  • Take a sunset Mokoro (dug-out canoe) trip, visit villages and local markets, visit a local clinic
  • Final day in Livingstone for optional adventure activities (elephant-back safaris and helicopter rides over the Victoria Falls)
  • Accommodation: thatched twin share hut with shared facilities (three-nights), twin share en-suite rooms in chalets
  • Cost: Livingstone to Livingstone: £655pp + local payment from £40pp
