Watching the English isn't the newest release out there, but it's a worthwhile - and fun - read for anyone not native to this land (or anyone interested in learning about their quirky national traits).
Here are 10 things I suspected and now fully know about the English, thanks to Kate Fox's book:
- The English are socially awkward, and have developed a number of tools to deal with this.
- One of them is humour. When in doubt, make a joke.
- Another is alcohol, since it makes everything a bit less painful.
- Privacy is extremely important to Brits, and when they meet, it can take a long time to uncover secret things like names and jobs.
- The English are also extremely modest, but much of their modest statements are actually brags in disguise.
- Akin to this is the understatement, which again, is often used to say something one would never outwardly say.
- Brits like to talk about the weather since it's a happy subject everyone can agree on. (It's rubbish!).
- The English always expect the worst, so when the worst happens, they're not surprised - and on the plus side, are able to deal with it.
- The pub is the place where everyone is equal, and it's the one place you're allowed to talk to strangers.
- And most importantly, there's an invisible queue at the pub, so don't worry, you will get served!
