What is Private Equity? Private equity firms are basically investment companies.
The name private equity refers to the methods they use to raise the funds they use.
Rather than go to the stock market and sell shares, private equity companies raise funds from private sources, typically pension funds and high-net-worth individuals. They then buy companies which they have identified as underperforming with this cash, in addition to borrowed money, but with the potential to do far better. Their goal is to turn the business around and sell it on at a profit at a future date.
