- The Bourne Ultimatum (17/08/2007)
As we approach the release of The Bourne Ultimatum (17 Aug), it is time to get us a refresher on the world of the assassin who does not have the best memory. And the this week's release The Bourne Supremacy - Extended Edition is a good way to start.
We have known Jason Bourne for a while now. If we only count his screen presence, he showed up for the first time in the 2002 film adaptation of The Bourne Identity. Much to the surprise of critics and audiences alike, it was a thrilling and entertaining movie.
Never had Matt Damon been so cool. We liked him in Good Will Hunting, and he looked cool in the Ocean 11+ series (as everybody else does) but here he actually WAS cool. Being fished out of the Mediterranean with amnesia, the first movie followed his quest to find out who he was until he finds that he was not a particularly nice person.
As a reminder, he worked for a clandestine CIA group called Treatstone which is essentially a bunch of trained assassins. He is the best of them, hence his employer is very keen to get him back, preferably in a body bag.
The second movie picks up with Bourne living undercover in the Far East and being dragged into another government conspiracy who cost him his girlfriend (which is very unfortunate for the viewer because we like Franka "Run Lola Run" Potente) and his cover. He then decides to go after his previous employer whilst being himself chased by a rivalling organisation. All this is filmed with a shaky handheld camera, which makes you feel you are right there with him in a taxi in Moscow tracked by a killer.
Some people credit the success the Bourne movie with the revamp of that other spy with the same initials, because the Bourne series is so much grittier than Bond ever was (well, maybe up to Casino Royale that is). When Bourne is attacked, it actually hurts him, and he is inherently vulnerable and far from invincible. And he has a personality with so many cracks that we actually care about him and want him to find out who he was.
But just like the other JB, he is just very cool. Which is why we love the final scene where he calls Joan Allen who thinks herself safe to tell her "Pam, get some rest, you look tired".
Judging by the new trailer where again he is telling one of his former superiors "If you were in your office, you would be standing right next to me", we can't wait for the Bourne Ulimatum to come out.
So an Extended Edition of The Bourne Supremacy might be just the right fix to bridge another 3 weeks.
