And The Oscar Goes To...
We wish we could've stayed up for last night's extravaganza. But thank to the InterWeb, we don't have to sit around and wait for for re-runs. We can wake up and catch up! So join us for this water cooler synopsis.
But first, a word from our sponsors.
Each year, about 40 Academy Awards of Merit (a.k.a. Oscars) are manufactured out of gold-plated Britannia metal by Chicago company R.S. Owens. Britannium (invented in Sheffield) is made of tin (93%), antimony (5%) and copper (2%), which is also the material used to make the America's Cup.
It is unknown who came up with the nickname 'Oscar'. One story attributes it to Bette Davis, who named hers after her first husband, whose middle name was Oscar, while another claims it was the Academy's Executive Secretary, who said the statue reminded her of her Uncle Oscar.
The first ceremony took place in May of 1929, and this year was the 80th anniversary. John Stewart was, predictably, hilarious.
And now, without further ado...
