The Darjeeling Limited (DVD)
The Darjeeling Limited is the brilliant, poignant story of three brothers estranged since the death of their father the year before.
Eldest brother Francis (Owen Wilson), a free spirited control freak who travels with a personal assistant complete with a machine for laminating itineraries, brings together his brothers with the aim to reconnect on a in a spiritual quest.
As Wes Anderson showed in The Royal Tenenbaums, dysfunctional families are his forte.
Peter (Adrian Brody) has left behind pregnant wife, and youngest brother Jack (Jason Schwartzman), an estranged from girlfriend. Sibling bonding gives way to rivalries, bickering and childish behaviour as the stories of their past are played out against the realities of a trip across India by train - The Darjeeling Limited.
This was one of my favourite films of 2007, and slipped a little under the radar when released as promotion was somewhat muted due to Owen Wilson's indisposition. It has the rare ability to make you laugh out loud and then cry out loud.
Also available as a free download from iTunes is the 13-minute prequel, Hotel Chevalier, which gives the back story to Jacks character and also stars Natalie Portman.

Martin Gallagher has never played for West Ham or England, nor had a number one hit single, but he has worked in the City for many years (for what that's worth). A life-long Londoner, he made the migration from east to west a few years back and is still trying to get used to the absence of fried chicken takeaways and the over abdundance of coffee shops. Martin is married, has two daughters, and is also interested in travelling, football and writing. He hopes to publish his first novel 'sometime in the future'.
