I knew I’d pit Seven Pounds up against an all-time great of this genre - 2004’s Crash, and I knew I was going to be let down. It would either be better than my favourite, Crash, or Seven Pounds would be a poor second and I would have fallen for the hype.
Will Smith plays the character of Ben Thomas, who you come to know as a man who’s lost the only thing he values most in his life. This information is supplied to you in the form of slightly annoying flashbacks, accompanied by him beginning to get involved in the lives of seven others.

Like a fractured film, you never know where one part fits into the whole until the end. But unfortunately, I found the film remained fractured. The one attempt at bringing all the pieces together left me thinking this was slightly undercooked.

I don't know if this was because I’d just spent two hours watching Smith attempt to make moody, whining faces like a child who wants to cry to make a point, or because I never understood on what basis the lucky 7 were chosen by Thomas, or the gaping plot hole no doctor would have ever allowed (even with consent). But it just didn’t seem to hit me like Crash did. At no point did I get a lump in my throat, or, in the end, believe enough for it to seem real to me.

However, this film has its emotional moments that might get hold of you and get you to question yourself, but I’m still dubious as to whether in a year's time you will remember the highlights let alone the message it tried to convey, which was...I can't quite remember.

No film is ruled out, be it French film noir, Hollywood CGI action, or Japanese Manga. Look to Omer for input on where to go and what to see, whether it’s for a first date, family outing, Sunday recovery session, or guy's - or girl's - night out. (Just don't make him watch Sex & the City again.)

I loved this film, it strongly reminded me of Kristin Scott Thomas in Il y a longtemps que je t'aime. The basis the lucky 7 are chosen seems clear enough to me, and the plotholes either didn't occur to me or didn't bother me much - so a matter of taste I suppose
