Not as adventurous as Fight Club - and lacking a ‘based on a true story’ tag line - inevitably means Fighting isn’t anything new or awe inspiring. But it turned out to be OK!
In hindsight, I was surprised Terrance Howard had signed on to Fighting, considering his stellar run of films. Had such a high profile name not been in the cast, I could see this film going straight to DVD. But lest you have the impression this film is drivel, don’t let my opening trash talk disillusion you; its actually quite charming.
Fighting has Channing Tatum playing Shawn MacArthur, a new kid in the Big Apple, barely making a living selling miscellaneous items on street kerbs. He gets hustled by a teenage gang run by Harvey Boarden (played by Terrance Howard). At this point, the brooding MacArthur shows off some street fighting skills to Boarden, who seizes the opportunity to take him under his wing as an up and coming street fighter.
Lets get the bad points out of the way. There wasn’t anything new you haven’t seen before, New York as a setting wasn’t utilised, and it was all very predictable. However the acting was more than acceptable, and fans of the O.C. will pleased to hear that MacArthurs character is an older replica of Ryan Atwood - brooding, but with a big heart. Awwww.
The soundtrack is great, providing an excellent background to some immense, sweaty-palmed fight scenes. But the fight scenes aren’t bloodthirsty or sickening at all.
In all it’s a 6.5 out of 10, enjoyable for the boys and maybe for couples. But it's nothing worth rushing down to your local cinema to see - unlike Terminator 4!

Omer Bhatti, Head Sales Trader of WorldSpreads and markets commentator during the week, is always happy to go to a cushy cinema and devour films on the weekend. No film is ruled out, be it French film noir, Hollywood CGI action, or Japanese Manga. Look to Omer for input on where to go and what to see, whether it’s for a first date, family outing, Sunday recovery session, or guy's - or girl's - night out. (Just don't make him watch Sex & the City again.)
