Not all festivals are big and scary (although we have always wanted to go to Burning Man). This weekend's Summer Sundae Weekender offers a tame version with (almost) the same bells & whistles. And then there's Bestival.
Actually, Summer Sundae is more like a big sleepover, where you:
  • Make new friends, but not ones who will get you arrested
  • Watch rock bands, but don't stay in the crowd when you should really visit the loo
  • Camp, but don't wander wasted at 3 a.m.
And it's very family friendly, but not so much so that you can't buy cocktails, real ales and other grown-up things.

The location isn't far from Leicester City Centre, which might explain the more-mellow vibe, as will the line-up: The Magic Numbers, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Spoon, Koop, Low and Martha Wainwright, among others.

It's this weekend, and tickets are still available.

If this is too tame for you, perhaps the Isle of Wight's Bestival is more your scene, with The Chemical Brothers, Beastie Boys, required fancy dress and Boutique Campsites.

Of course, tickets are long sold out, but you can check out the Ticket Swap for ones that become available for the event, which is the second weekend in September.
