This Saturday, International Women's Day will be celebrated around the world. Does this mean we get to drink champagne and toast how fab we are? Could do. Or we could attend an IWD event and THEN toast our multi-layered fabulousness.
The first IWD was observed in 1909 in the US, and became connected to, among other things, the famous Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, in which 140 women lost their lives. In 1917, demonstrations around International Women's Day in Russia helped spark the Russian Revolution, and in modern times, around the world, it's a global celebration for the achievements of women.
The activities taking place in London are as global as the Day itself, and many take place in East London.
