Happy Fourth of July. Burgers, flags and parades. And presidential elections (just a few more months, folks!). Here's the good and the bad and the ugly.
Eat
The best way to celebrate the Fourth is to eat American. After all, eating is America's favourite pastime, and it shows. Our suggestion? Dinner at Automat. The food is great (especially the burgers, wedge salad with blue cheese, macaroni and cheese with spinach and the cheesecake), although it never feels like the greatest value. But the space is nice and the service is good, so hey, where better to take in your weekly calories in one meal?
Drink
America drinks terribly. Bad beer chased with leftover puritanical ideology. Britain does it better - especially old school Britain. So visit www.savetheboozer.com and check out the best of the old man pubs.
See
America loves wrestling, but seriously. Get a better variety this weekend at The Roundhouse with the Lucha Libre spectacular, featuring 16 of Mexico's greatest masked wrestlers duking it out in an all-encompassing (North American, get it?) cultural extravaganza.
Buy
In this year of credit crunch, placing orders from America is smart. So forget the Royal Exchange. Head to best department store ever, Nordstrom's, online store and get yourself a ToyWatch. Now available in neon for the summer (and at $195, you don't have to feel guilty about being sick of it come autumn).
Listen
Ask any American with a brain, and they'll tell you that National Public Radio is one of the best things coming out of the 50 states. And luckily for us, we can listen online. Our favourite station, which include the best of NPR talk radio along with new music, is KCRW (Santa Monica, CA). The bluegrass being played on WAMU(Washington, DC) makes it a close second.
