During these challenging times, where most of the news is of doom and gloom and involves the words crunch, credit and crisis, we thought we'd try to add a bit of sunshine to the lives of those who work in the City by highlighting its 'hidden gems'. Let us know if you have one to add.
To start the ball rolling, we give you St Stephen Walbrook, near Bank.

So why is this church a hidden gem? Where do you start?

Is it the rich history, architecture or all-round reverence of this beautiful building (designed by Wren in 1672 as a prototype for the dome of St Pauls Cathedral, and lovingly restored between 1978-87), the unique, large round marble altar (created by Henry Moore as part of the church’s restoration), or the regular events held (such as organ recitals and concerts)?

The answer is all of this and more.

Sitting in St Stephen during one of its regular free organ recitals (every Friday at 12.30pm) and listening to the many talented organists playing some wonderful music can change your day and even inspire you.

There is also a series of Handel Anniversary concerts running until the end of March 2009, which again provide you with the opportunity to see and hear this church at its very best.

For the religious among you, there is a Eucharist every Thursday with choir and organ music. Refreshingly, when listening to the Archdeacon speak you get the sense that he and the church really do understand and embrace those in the financial sector and the City as a whole.

For a change of pace, experience St Stephen Walbrook yourself. The music and the surroundings make a worthy escape from today's crunch.
