It's purely accidental that 80% of The Weekend focuses on the East. Dining at Liverpool Street Station, recreating a bygone era, retro bowling. In fact, this weekend, you can even Journey to the West in the East.
Eat
The Great Eastern Hotel became ANdAZ a year ago, and since then, we've rather enjoyed the dining options. Miyako serves great Japanese in an authentic (non-hotel) setting and Eastway is a spacious brasserie that's more accommodating than most (read: we ordered the smoked salmon, and they served it with a bagel and cream cheese on request. Now 1901 has reopened in a rather grand setting with a wine & cheese tasting counter and a huge stone bar. Let it never be said that "there is nothing around Liverpool Street Station".
Drink
These days, booze is nothing special. It's everywhere, and you can have as much as you'd like. Not so much the way it was in North America during the '20s. So what a natural idea for a party! This Saturday sees the next Prohibition 1920 party, replete with silent films, cocktails in teacups, gambling, floor shows and fancy dress. Tickets are £15 and it's taking place in East London. Naturally.
Watch
Still Want Your MTV? So do we. And now, after years of being deprived, it's all available online. MTVMusic.com has pretty much every video you could ever want on demand, ready for your weekend viewing pleasure. So no more whining. You can have your MTV!
Roll
The gentrification of Brick Lane has reached a new level with the opening of retro-glam bowling alley All Star Lanes. If it's anything like the others, expect quality American fare, good music and rather expensive bowling games. But to have bowling in the East End? Well worth it. (Of course, you could also rent the bowling alley at Shoreditch House, but that might redefine expensive bowling games.)
See
Monkey: Journey to the West. What is it? We're not sure, and so we'll quote: "...a contemporary Mandarin show which features nearly 40 performers including acrobats, martial artists, singers, graphic illustration and an orchestra combining Western and Chinese instruments." And with Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz at the helm, it must be good. At the O2 through the 5th of December.
