Ask anyone who works in the music industry and they'll tell you things have changed. Kids are buying digital (if they're buying music at all), and the demise of the record store is imminent. But clearly Rough Trade has a more optimistic view.
The venerable West London record store, which began on Portobello Road in 1976 and moved to its current location on Talbot Road in 1982, just opened Rough Trade East in the Truman Brewery.
City shoppers, this is not far from you.
But it's certainly hipper than your normal haunts, which makes it all the more perfect a place to keep you up to date with releases you've never heard of (but can, on this very listening post!).
City shoppers, this is not the place to buy Celine Dion.
But don't be intimidated - sure they're more about the counter culture than the mainstream, but you don't have to be an East Side trendster to enter the shop (which is much larger and less cluttered than the original location). You just need to have an open mind and a few quid.
If this seems too cool for your school, you can also shop online, where the same impressive CD and vinyl selection is available. Start with these, available this week:
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - Live at the BBC Vol. 1, CD
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - Live at the BBC Vol. 2, CD
The Coral - Who's Gonna Find Me (7 inch)
Various Artists - Groove Armada Presents Lovebox Weekender (CD)
Sigur Ros - In a Frozen Sea (7 LP box set)
Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel (remastered CD)
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (LP)
Black Flag - The First Four Years (LP)
Fela Kuti - Best Of (CD)
Curtis Mayfield - The Very Best Of (CD)
Beastie Boys - (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (to Party) (12 inch)
