Most business people wish they could exercise more than they do, and businesses and employees alike agree that fit employees work better. So can your office help by bringing yoga classes to you?
Yoga For Life runs yoga classes for businesses, conferences and events. This means they can come into your conference room once a week and get you saluting the sun. So what if your colleagues see you? You'll be so much more flexible than they are.
We talk to founder Minna Cutler about the logistics of yoga in the office and why exactly it's so good for you.
Can a person practice yoga alone, or does it need to be part of a larger fitness program?
Most people do both. As part of a general fitness and wellbeing program, yoga is invigorating and very importantly, enjoyable. It's not a competitive sport and everyone, whatever their fitness levels, can take part at their own pace. The philosophy behind yoga is that by regular practice you will tone your body and mind and relieve and reduce natural stress levels.
What kind of space is required for a business wanting to host a yoga class?
It depends on the size of the group. The maximum size of a group should never exceed 15 to ensure proper attention and support from the teacher. I need enough room so that the number of participants can stretch out comfortably, and most importantly, a room where no phones, Blackberrys or other gadgets can disturb us!
Tell us about your weekend retreats. Are they totally gruelling?
Absolutely not. They are fun, we drink wine (organic), we eat good healthy food, we relax and we go home feeling energized. I want my clients (who I prefer to call friends) to go home wanting to come back, not going away feeling exhausted and miserable. In the morning we have an energizing practice to prepare us for the day ahead, which can be spent pampering yourself in a spa, walking the hills or just reading a book. The evening practice is calming and gentle before we sit down for a delicious dinner.
You also offer yoga for golfers. What's the connection between yoga and golf?
Both are processes where the mind and body have to work together to achieve the best results. Virtually every professional golfer will practice some form of combined mind and body relaxation.
And lastly, what's the longest you've ever stood on your head?
Gosh - I've never counted! Probably six or seven minutes.
