Planning on watching the marathon this Sunday? Get creative with your placement and with your day.
Watching from Tower Bridge sounds good, but is it realistic, as one of the most picturesque places on the course?
Mile 6 - Greenwich
When was the last time you straddled the Prime Meridian? Wait until after the runners depart (9-10am) and after you've checked them out at Mile 10 (9:30-11:30), then trek up the hill, take a silly photo of yourself, the fuel a trek through Greenwich Market with fairy cakes from Daisy Cakes Bake Shop.
Mile 12 - Bermondsey
So Sunday isn't the day for the antiques market, but there are other antique shops to scour in the area (after you cheer on the runners between 10am-1pm). For a spot of brunch, try to get a booking (NOW) at Village East, since The Garrison will no doubt be full.
Miles 13 & 22 - Wapping
This is perhaps the most effective place to watch the marathon, since it goes both directions on The Highway. The south side of the road is active between 10am-1pm, and the north side between 10:45-3:30, so between 10-11am, you can see the elite men, elite women and wheelchairs, in two directions. This calls for a drink at one of Wapping's riverside pubs, The Town of Ramsgate, The Prospect of Whitby or The Captain Kidd.
Mile 19 - Canary Wharf
For those of you who don't work at the Wharf, is there a better place to run an errand, do some fun shopping, catch a film and have a bite to eat? Just make sure you catch the runners between 10:40am-2:50pm in between your bites of dim sum at Royal China and before your film begins at West India Quay.
Miles 23-25.5 - The Embankment
If you're brave enough to make this popular spot your marathon destination, then good on you. You'll find us watching from across the river over a civilised lunch at Skylon.
