Is there anything worse than wires and batteries? Yeah, actually, lots of things, but it sure would be great to do without them, especially when you have to lug them around with you on your holiday. Enter the Devotec Solar Sound speakers.
According to the marketing blurb, these are: "The world’s first solar powered wireless Bluetooth stereo speakers." It sounds cool, and everyone loves wireless and solar power. But, do they work?
In short, yes. They really are pretty cool. The speakers themselves are small, about 8" in length and 2" square, pretty good for portability, not ideal for sound quality. That said, for their size, the sound is pretty full, and it's only when you crank it up to 11 that you start to get really noticeable distortion.
What undoubtedly sets these speakers apart, though, is the combination of Bluetooth, solar power and the lithium-ion battery. On the power side of things, the battery, on a full charge will get you four to eight hours of playtime. The solar panel won't power the speakers fully, but they do get you an extra few hours if you're in the sun. Eight hours by the pool or on the beach is well within reach.
The Bluetooth works in the same way as a Bluetooth headset, but newer implementations allow for stereo sound to be wirelessly transmitted. This is great if you have music on your phone or you have a newer model iPod touch. We tested the speakers with an iPhone and the connection and streaming was seamless.
As an extra bonus, the device includes a microphone allowing you to use it as a desktop speaker phone. Just leave your mobile connected to it and away you go, all calls will be sent through the speakers. The only issue we found was that the microphone was on the back of the device and occasionally we had to raise our voices during calls.
The Devotec Solar Sound is a well thought out, handy little device that does everything well and all at a reasonable price (£49.99).
