Punters will talk about the art of rugby long after the England v France World Cup 2007 semis game in Paris. Let's talk rugby AS art to invest in closer to home.
Two bronze and stone busts of rugby greats - English player Lawrence Dallaglio and French player Serge Betsen - currently grace the British embassy foyer in the City of Lights. A life-sized bronze of Winston and full-sized portrait of Her Majesty look on.
The two flesh-and-blood creators, ex-London Wasps winger Simon Hunter (on stone) and artist Paul Vanstone (on bronze) spent a year and a half getting ready for the exhibition.
With a limited run of eight editions per bust, these beauties are for sale. If you are a rugby fan, an art aficionado and can part with €25,000 (trés français) for one and not go bust, you could be looking at a positive return of 100% in five years. This according to Hunter, who wouldn't make a bad forex sales guy by the sound of it.
Future rugby art projects from the duo include a piece called Homage to the Scrum or 'Homage de Melee' (and really, that's where England took it to Australia in the quarter-finals), featuring Wasps front row with English captain Vickery and French captain Ibanez. A large marble bust of Sebastian Chabal is also in the works.
If you have your own art project in mind, rugby or otherwise, check out www.paulvanstone.co.uk for more marbles and bronzes and www.marmi.co.uk for all things rock.
