- Dressing for S.x and Our City (27/05/2008)
Having been away for a month attending graduate careers fairs and assessment centres, it has shocked me how uninformed today's students are - and how poorly dressed.
The old adage about how you never get a second chance to make a first impression is never more true than when it comes to job interviews.
Personally, I don't care if you have an MBA, if you turn up to a City & Finance Recruitment Fair in an orange tank top (you know who you are).
To be honest, I feel almost as poor as when I was a student, so I think there are probably a few experienced hires amongst us who could probably learn a few things from clever high street shopping.
You don't have to spend a fortune to look a million dollars (and in today's climate who can afford to?). Even a classic black skirt can be dressed up with some of the smart tailoring around. Both Warehouse and Mango have some gorgeous and very-now pussy-bow blouses that will add a smart yet stylish twist. If you are brave enough, a shot of green or mustard silk can be found in Hennes' blouses collections.
Trying to look individual whilst fitting into the corporate world can be difficult - after five months I am still surprised that woollen ribbed tights raise a few eyebrows in the Wharf - but a dress can be a clever alternative if you can't afford one of Reiss' gorgeous skirt suits.
Both Mango and Zara offer quality shift and wrap dresses without breaking the bank, and for an investment piece, queens-of-the-kitten-heel LK Bennett continue to establish their clothing credentials with classic wrap dresses in quirky patterns and this seasons colours. There are enough cropped jackets and smart blazers on the high street this season to create a complete outfit quickly and cheaply.
As for the guys, I suspect most of you have already fallen victim to the TM Lewin mould, but for those of you daring to break away from the Rothschilds pinstripes, TopMan should be your one stop stop for a slightly different take on even the most basics such as the humble white shirt.
Now, lets talk about that MBA.
And that tank top....

Charlotte is a recruitment manager at a rather large, rather global bank. She made the switch to banking after several years of recruiting for the fashion industry. Charlotte is now using her fashion contacts to look beyond the corporate dress code and ask, "Can you ever look Sexy in The City?" We're very much hoping the answer is YES.
