Georgie Coleridge Cole is the editor of SheerLuxe.com, and she knows fashion. Following are her tips for dressing on trend and in style this season.
Whether you’re dressing for work or play, this Autumn and Winter there is no shortage of choice.
Dark Romance
One of the biggest looks shown for A/W. Get dark and dangerous in black - be it an off the shoulder LBD or the long and lean maxi. Add lashings of lace, it’s the detail du jour. For added allure look for gauze panels, chiffon layers, embellishment dark damask, sequins, feathers and dramatic jewels.
Bad Girl
This season’s bad girl, whether you’re going more soft goth or punk, is all about serious attitude. The brave will don studs and spikes a la Burberry, the rest should stick to zips and buckles. Work delicate cobweb knits and tights, chunky utilitarian boots, high necks and long hems.
Country Life
The knotted silk scarf leads the way in this trend. Team it with fur, sheepskin, shearling and tweed, and you’re set for days in the country hobnobbing with the aristocracy.
Plaid Parade
Plaid, tartan or hounds tooth should be in every woman’s wardrobe this season. Opt for the modern day alternative to the rodeo lumberjack, or be bold and clash a head to toe ensemble of contrasting oversized checks.
Red Alert
Whether in shades or ruby, scarlet or tomato red, don’t go without a ruffle red blouse, a LRD or a bright coat this A/W. Complete the look with black opaque tights and patent black accessories.
Folkloric
For the grown up hippy hark back to the ’70s with peasant blouses and pretty prints. Mix ’n match and team tassels, fringing and skinny leather belts with vintage finds for inimitable boho style.
Fall Florals & Prints
A/W needn’t be all about doom and gloom, and floral prints are aplenty. If florals are too feminine, wrap up in an animal print instead.
Power Dresser
Show you mean business and look for architectural shapes and structured silhouettes. The cut is contrasting: either sharp and severe or round and billowing at the shoulders. The power suit is back. Coats are best kept simple and belted.
Sequins, Bows, Pleats & Ruffles
Can’t quite leave all that femininity behind? Fear not, runways were awash with sequins, ruffles, pleats, tulle layers and bows. Throw in a zip or a splash of lace, leather or black patent and bring it all right up to date.
