Yesterday I ran errands at the Royal Exchange. Travel-sized Jo Malone Perfume for me (not a bargain), Tiffany charm for a new baby (definitely not a bargain). Then, walking past the afternoon coffee (not Champagne) clutch, I noticed the Paul Smith Sale Store.
Has this always been here? Had I been too fixated on drinks or diamonds in the past to notice it?
I wandered in the store and immediately solved two outstanding birthday gifts - trendy T-shirts for eight and 10-year-old boys (£18/each, down from £34). I wandered over to the men's section and checked out the accessories. Cool keychain in the Paul Smith striped leather (£25), and my goodness - an overnight bag in that same stripy pattern (£265). While I couldn't justify the latter, I did find myself with a new keychain. My husband got a new pair of striped socks (£7), and I considered a book on design.
I wandered through the women's section and looked at a few things. A striped cardigan at £199 wasn't exactly a deal, but a pair of impractical - but darling - wedges at £79 were. Scarves, tops, jackets - this store had it all.
Then I landed on the best deal of all - a pair of swim trunks for my husband. Dark blue with beige boat blueprints, they cost a mere £34 (down from twice the price).
And when I opened the shopping bag to check out my goods, I found a striped bag had been thrown in for nothing. Meant for his swim trunks? Either way, that was definitely a bargain.

Foreign-born Madame B thinks she's a City girl, but mostly just walks our streets checking things out and searching for the best wi-fi hotspots offered by The Cloud. You can spot her typing furiously on her shiny white MacBook, wearing dark sunglasses and drinking a glass of champagne. She's one half of the Shopaholics, which might explain things...
