Everyone I know is going green. I barely know my shoe size, let alone my carbon footprint. Offsites OK, but offsets? Will it all cramp our City lifestyles?
C'mon, you can't afford not to cushion your carbon footfalls. Not only are there for-profit organizations that will let you target your green giving (see Carbon Footprint, CarbonOffsetsLtd and TerraPass), but charities and volunteer organizations themselves, the Third Sector, are learning how to grow greener through the City of London.
The Lord Mayor's City Bridge Trust has just wrapped up an eco-audit of 12 London charities. If you'd like to help the trust continue its green work or get involved with the greening of the participating charities below, do get in touch:
ACF - Association of Charitable Foundations
ACEVO - Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations
Centrepoint
CSV - Community Service Volunteers
Crisis
East London Mosque
Hackney Community Transport
Merton Voluntary Services Council
NCVO - National Council for Voluntary Organisations
ROTA - Race on the Agenda
RNID - Royal National Institute for Deaf People
The Building Exploratory
City firms are following their employees' leads when it comes to greener giving and business practices. If banks, asset managers and the like work with employees contributing to green causes, and give back and tackle climate change together, those firms change into employers of choice.
Green business initiatives, as with green giving, have trickled up as well. For investment banks and institutional investors, there was a time when SRI (socially responsible investing) by 'first adapters' was chuckled at if not downright derided. Not anymore. There's environmental dosh in them thar hills.
And City firms need green cred. It's now about turning sustainable feel-good investments into market fertilizer to grow the bottom line. For the latest SRI deals, check out just-launched news site Responsible Investor set up by another friend gone green.
Now, if you're stuck in the office and need some inspiration... turn on green.tv. Don't miss the clip on "What does your car say about you?"
