Aviva Group chief executive Richard Harvey has left the building for a one-year charity stint in Africa. Can your career survive a sabbatical too?
Should you even attempt one? The answer to both queries, as with much in life, is a resounding 'That depends.' Depends on what you set out to do while away, depends on your employer, depends on your career and life stages in the City...

Here Is The City's chief exec Ian Brown recently joined Harvey and CNBC Europe's Steve Sedgwick for a Squawkbox panel on City sabbaticals. They covered talent demand, firms' corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes, and how to leave the City temporarily and come back gracefully.

The good news is that firms are paying attention. Both incoming graduate talent and seniors looking for a life change are driving the move to swap work for good works at some point in their careers. Harvey said his was not the only firm needing to respond in order to land - and retain - the best lateral talent and future leaders.

Harvey will be returning to the City after the 'life-changing' experience but not to his previous role at Aviva.

The panel discussed some dos and don'ts, which boiled down to employer buy-in and employee communication to ensure successful sabbaticals:

Sabbaticals that work for City employers
  1. Charity (adds to firm's branding)
  2. MBA (adds to firm's leadership pool)
  3. Research (adds to firm's market intelligence)
  4. NOT consultancy - only for redundancies
Stay in the loop while away
  1. Communicate w/boss, team members and key clients
  2. Attend important meetings or conference call in if possible
  3. Act as a go-to for advice and input on deals or strategy
  4. Get employer buy-in - how does sabbatical help the firm?
Harvey, along with his wife Kay, will be working with Concern Universal in Kenya, Mozambique and Malawi. Their projects will include installation of clean water supplies, microfinance initiatives and education in schools on health issues.
