Thirty-years old, newly single and living in the Big Smoke. The dating world was my oyster, and for me, it’s online dating all the way. It has pros and cons, but it’s just like my hobby - shopping - but instead of for clothes and shoes, I’m shopping for boys.
In the online boy shopping quest, I generally avoid the high streets in favour of the boutiques, and in line with this principle, my current shop of choice is clicktonight.com.  The window shopping is fantastic, but you have to watch out for boys that only put up one photo. Dating a One Photo Wonder is a high risk strategy. Everyone has a photo where they look hot, and there is a very high chance of false misrepresentation.

When it comes to making a purchase (i.e. picking a date), you can’t really go wrong as long as you stick rigidly to THE RULE. If you’re newer than me to the dating game and are unfamiliar with the rule, then read on.

Make sure you engineer a phone call into the pre-date interaction before you agree to meet. A casual, “Give me a call to sort out the details” generally does the trick. If the potential date follows up that request with a text message, it’s a double thumbs down. The only possible assumption from this is that their chat is diabolical. Drop them. With the callers, the call gives you a chance to assess their chat to see if an evening with them would beat a night at home watching Sex and the City and playing on Facebook. And at that stage, only offer up ‘non key days’ for dates, a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

When it comes to the date, chuck on the reliable first date outfit and make your back-up plan. Mine is generally to meet them early with an exciting set of fictitious plans which can of course be your saviour if the boy turns out to be a loser, or can be easily cancelled if things are going well. Get drunk - not horribly drunk, just tipsy enough to loosen things up.

And to kiss or not to kiss? I pretty much decide this at the start, although an earlier decision can be clouded or reversed by a steady supply of vodka, lime and sodas. A cheeky snog is certainly within my first date remit, but that is where the action ends for me.

For the most part, shopping for boys on clicktonight.com has been fantastic. The beauty of the online dating world is that you meet people that you may never come across in your daily life, and mine have ranged from professional sportsmen to professional City types and from students to plumbers.

There have, however, been a few returns and refunds.

Not everything is how it appears in the shop window.
