Following the heightened excitement of Christmas, the busy social life and the over indulgence, comes the realisation that it's back to reality and back to work. For some the anti-climax of New Year's can hit particularly hard, but it doesn't have to.
The New Year, traditionally a time for newness, should be a refresher bringing with it a positive and healthy outlook.
For a start, instead of making unrealistic New Years resolutions that simply fuel further stress when you can't stick to them, try some positive thinking and smaller more achievable changes:
New wardrobe
At the forefront of your re-invention should be a new look beginning with a new wardrobe. The sales are happening so it could be a great opportunity to grab a bargain. Make some colourful purchases in this season's yellows, greens and purples, sure to be a mood lifter. Buy clothes that fit but more importantly, buy clothes that make you feel good.
Exercise
It's the classic New Year's resolution - buy an expensive gym membership to lure you to exercise regularly, until you realise you have been once in the last nine months and feel terrible! Come on, you're a smart man, just because there's Molton Brown in the shower doesn't mean you are going to go more. Instead take up a physical interest or sport. Martial arts offer a great chance for self-development or a team sport can keep you just as fit as well as social.
Detox
If you're feeling sluggish and bloated and sporting dark circles under your eyes, you need a detox. That doesn't have to mean a trendy celebrity diet, an enduring fast or a painful colonic. Plenty of water and greens will have you on the road to recovery in no time. Cut down alcohol consumption, fatty and sugary foods, but be kind to yourself and remember: everything in moderation, including moderation!
Relationships
It is a time for reflection, and an important time to reassess current relationships. Studies prove that unhealthy relationships and friendships can be the biggest cause of the blues and emotional stress. If there are any issues in your relationships, confront them and tackle them head on. Don't be afraid to ask what is wrong and get what you want.
Holiday
It is been dark nights for way too long and spending all the daytime hours in the office can be miserable. Why not treat yourself to a last minute, well-deserved getaway? A few days Speedo-clad and soaking up the rays from your hammock will refresh you no end. There's nothing better than a vitamin D injection and a Piña Colada to put a smile on your face.
