Four months in and I almost admitted defeat. Not only had I stopped going; I had cancelled the gym membership several weeks back. And while I am £40 better off each month in my pocket, I am 14 pounds worse off around the waist.
We all set our ‘Get Fit’ resolutions with such a water tight plan that we couldn'’t do anything but succeed. We all started to see results, we all kept it up for two or three months, then we all hit that ‘'what'’s the point/I can'’t be bothered'’ wall. With spring well and truly here, it’'s time we adopt a fresh approach that is effective and efficient.
 
Three weeks ago I came up with an idea. My inspiration was the many cyclists weaving in and out of the traffic; from the bus window against which I was being squashed I could see why cyclist numbers have soared in the capital. It’'s refreshing, quicker than public transport and gets you fit. But I don't fancy being hit by a car at 20 mph, although it did get me thinking.
 
The good weather has finally arrived, so why don'’t I put the spring into my step and jog to work?
 
I gave it a try, and what a treat it was. By the time I reached the office doors the sweat I had broken into was not an uncomfortable one, and I felt energetic, alive, and ready for my day without all the morning stress. I have since discovered several routes that keep it interesting: there is a direct route for when I’m literally running late, another along the Thames, and another through a large open park for those bright mornings, all of which get me to the office within 30 minutes. Then I allow another 15 minutes to get showered and changed.
 
If I haven'’t convinced you enough, here are some other benefits to get you moving:
  • For most jogging in doesn'’t take that long; it’s probably quicker than your average bus or tube journey
  • It keeps your evenings free
  • You don'’t have to go out of your way to work out
  • It’'s free and free from packed and smelly buses and tubes
  • It’'s safe
  • A thirty minute jog twice a day, three times a week will certainly take the pounds from your waist (and gym membership) and put them back in your pocket
 
All you need is a decent pair of running shoes, appropriate clothing and a rucksack for your work clobber. You can even leave your wash bag and towel in the office.
 
But don’'t listen to me yapping on about it, give it a try.
 
Even if it is just for the spring, I can guarantee you will reap the rewards.
