Another long week at work and I was pretty fed up with formulating net capital ratios, analyzing P&L statements and calculating haircuts. It would be a joy to work with hair at this point.
Number crunching can be robotic and soulless, but with all the new regulations and financial testing the government was subjecting us to on a daily basis, I was starting to miss the monotonous, boring nature of it all. Those stress tests were stressing me out. I needed a way to relax, and I thought to myself, that maybe now would be a good time for therapy.
It had been a while and I couldn't recall the last time I scheduled an appointment. My sessions were always intense and I usually went through a rollercoaster of emotions - trepidation, realization, release, elation. Sometimes I don't know how I would get through life if it wasn't for Mr. Karaoke. He's always happy to see me and he always makes me feel at home.
But in all seriousness, karaoke has been a long-time hobby of mine. I'm one of those guys who meticulously combs through the song books and looks for just the right tune for my current mood (must be my analytical background). I always request a tambourine to set the beat and enhance the rhythm of the song. You could probably say I'm a karaoke fanatic.
Reserving a room to sing in is good, but I definitely prefer singing at the bar. The crowd can get really into it, the camaraderie is great, and by the end of the night, all of my self-esteem issues have been resolved. If we could only put a karaoke bar on every street corner of the planet, I'm convinced there would be no war and only harmony around the world.
We could put to rest the myth that all rock stars need therapy because we'd be able to prove that just being one provides it.

Sayheykid lives in New York and has worked in the financial services industry for over 10 years. Currently a VP in Regulatory Reporting at a large bank that has received TARP money, he has survived through the drama of layoffs, constant reorganization, public finger pointing, and vicious brow beatings. Navigating through the financial headwaters has made him a bit more contemplative about what life is truly about, and will be writing about how things have changed in light of the events of the last year.
